Relaxed zip, sexy optimism, natural pep and sheer gall characterise this album, recorded in 1997. The title suggests courage, innuendo and of course pizzicato ukulele playing. This is a most interesting assemblage, something more than a mere shopping trolley dash through the archives of sonic history, more accurately viewed as an integration of disparate approaches to audible culture.
'Pluck' was recorded in the orchestra's studio, amid the dust and detritus of a decade long backlog of filing and correspondence, the fruiting bodies of various fungi peering down on the seated orchestral ranks, from walls running with damp. Only weeks later, the studio site was demolished to become a cash and carry supermarket. With impeccable ukulele logic, the title track will appear on a subsequent album.
