  • The Ukes to Premiere Newly Commissioned Show!

When this Lousy War is Over

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain marks 100 years since the ‘war to end all wars’ with a new show, commissioned by Birmingham Town Hall, exploring popular music from the time.

How do we reminisce and connect through music? Music conjuring ordinary life can be a very welcome comfort when you are scared and a long way from home, but can also be used to make bold statements, stir controversy and send a message.

When war makes life so unutterably hard sometimes all you can do is laugh, and sing…and play the ukulele. Hear songs and music from around the world rub shoulders with pacifist, political songs and ‘old time’ tunes in this entertaining and thought-provoking show.

The Show will be premiered at Birmingham Town Hall on November 9 2014

  • A Ukulele Happening in Uppsala: Sept 4-6 2014

A Smörgåsbord of cool songs, hot tunes, laughter and stomping music!

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is returning to the Regina, Uppsala. This time the show will be a return to the roots, a playful, spontaneous evening sharing fun and music with friends. New ideas will be aired, different approaches will be made, audience feedback is welcomed. The show will be in the spirit of jazz, rather than the actual sound of jazz. The ukes will be playful with music and entertainment, improvisatory within a prepared context.

This is the sort of show the Ukulele Orchestra was first famous for 30 years ago, unpredictable, anarchic, irreverent, satirical and yet affectionate to the material, and the worlds of rock, classical music, comedy and community feeling.

It is appropriate that the ukes are returning to their roots in time to celebrate their 16 million minutes of world touring (that’s what we’ll reach during the 30 year anniversary) including a couple of swedish tunes (what could they be?), the essence of Woodstock in 10 minutes, an exposition of the Ukulele Binomial Classification and Taxonomy of Music (Linne has got nothing on the ukulele) and an exploration of how the issues of copyright affect the creative process. Hilarious!

  • The Ukes in America on Sky Arts 1

We are pleased to announce that 'The Ukes In America' will make its UK broadcast premiere next week! The documentary following us around the US will be broadcast on Sky Arts 1 on Fri May 23 at 7.45pm and repeated Sun May 25 at 3.15pm. Both transmissions will be followed by the UOGB Live At Sydney Opera House. You don't want to miss the film the Radio Times has described as 'Hugely entertaining." Surely worth the effort to Sky+!

The documentary was made by our friends at Litmus Films and was made possible thanks to an army of crowdfunders. If you are not a UK viewer, you could always lobby your laical network to broadcast the film or in the meantime, the double-disc, multi-language DVD with loads of extras you won't see on the telly is available from this website in both NTSC and Pal region 0 formats.

New tunes from 2014, old tunes from the ukes' original 1985 show, more wit and humour and a glint of beauty will give everyone a rollickin' good time as the UOGB affectionately let all genres of music out of their boxes.

Of course, those three guys, Ant & Dec and Robbie Williams will NOT be appearing. But the songs which the orchestra taught to, and performed with, those very gentlemen on the Saturday Night Takeaway on April the 5th will feature. They were a joy to work with and we look forward to the possibility of a joint album anytime soon.

Make it to the Palace on Monday the 19th of May for some tuneful mayhem!
