Ukulele World Service Episode 1

The Ukulele World Service is made under socially distanced conditions but consists of the musicians of the Orchestra playing and singing in the same space for the first time since February 2020. They have fun with the material, and include music never performed or recorded by the Orchestra before.

The programme also contains some rather winningly daft interludes which might have been constructed in homage to Terry Gilliam or Oliver Postgate in the form of rather pythonesque piffle. There are amusing and entertaining ingredients in the show. In episode one George even plays a solid body electric ukulele.

This show constitutes a new way of working for the Orchestra which is necessitated by the fact that gigs and concerts are not currently possible. This is the Orchestra you know and love, but as you’ve never seen them before, positioned cunningly in equidistant formation like a constellation of stars. Close enough for musical identification and collaboration but as safely separate from each other as multiple versions of those other stars: Caster and Pollux or the Pleiades. The space station is clearly putting us in the zone now.
