This CD, recorded in 1989, was the second by the UOGB. It was originally planned as a vinyl album with seven songs one side and eight instrumentals on the other, but was released as a CD under licence to CBS / Sony in 1990.
This is a "back-to-basics" conception, which, as usual, features only voice and ukulele, but which includes some cunning sonic ukulele based effects.
People who are familiar with the 21st century output of the Ukulele Orchestra will find this recording from the last century of interest, inhabiting, as it does, relevant territory which predates the current ukulele wave. On reviewing the track, "Anything is Beautiful", the Guardian newspaper opined: "The ukulele has at last found its avant-garde". From toe-tapping country swing to hilarious vintage jazz, from stately classical sounds to Japanese koto effects, from the heartbreak of the title track to the Brechtian anguish of "Easter Sunday", this recording shows a variety of moods and styles, each track at the top of its game, and all giving us views of the world of music through the magic keyhole of the ukulele.
