  • Concert For Kitty Play-Along Song Announced

    Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
    A Concert for Kitty
    The Barbican
    Main Hall
    Friday 26 January 2018
    8pm

Join the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain at a special concert at the Barbican, as we celebrate the life of our dear friend and founder member Kitty Lux, who sadly passed away last year.

From its inception in 1985, Kitty was a driving force behind the orchestra and key part of its style; she helped shape the orchestra from its outsider, art school, punk-rock-meets-jazz-and-early-music roots to its current status as an international institution.

The event will be a celebratory concert featuring lively toe-tapping, stomping tunes to dark, mordant ballads, with irony, wit and good humour. A show featuring the orchestra’s greatest hits as well as songs dear to, or sung by Kitty, with special guest appearances from friends and former members of the orchestra.

As part of the concert the Ukes invite the audience to play and sing along in a musical tribute to Kitty. The chosen song is David Bowie's 'Rebel Rebel'. The chord sheet can be downloaded HEREPlease print and bring a copy with you if you wish to play along.

  • Upcoming German Dates

The orchestra is looking forward to wishing our German friends ein Frohes Neues Jahr as we are returning to Germany for gigs on 9th to 13th February in Dortmund, Duesseldorf, Koblenz, Munich and Pirmasens. We are looking forward to meeting familiar friends (and making new ones) in Germany

  • New Album Out Now!

‘By Request: Songs From the Set List’  is an album created in direct response to our fans wishlist of music.  An album conceived to deliver some of the list of requests received from fans all around the planet, from Tasmania to Svalbard, Lerwick to Adelaide, Paris to Toronto, or from Beijing to New York, in short wherever the Ukes have performed and thrilled audiences with their renowned stomping, laughter inducing, thought provoking live shows.

The album was recorded at Urchin studio in London. It has the lustre, depth and sonic clarity which only a fully equipped modern studio with a great acoustic can bring to bear. Plus the time for the orchestra to stretch out in space and recording time. This recording promises to be the one which sets the standard for any other ukulele orchestra recordings. There are old and new popular songs, obscure but choice oldies, twisted covers and mash ups, and the inimitable jollity, joy and exuberance of the orchestra's celebrated style; from hard rocking classics to moody ballads via a confluence of Woodstock and New Orleans Mardi Gras.

The Ukes have arranged for a 20% discount for group bookings of 10 or more to facilitate the many ukulele ensembles, orchestras and clubs that they have met or inspired over the years to join them.

The show also marks a return to the Barbican after more than 10 years – their week-long residency in 2005 was a significant moment for The Ukes. The DVD 'Anarchy in the Ukulele' was filmed during the run and has received millions of hits on Youtube, raising the profile of the band in both in the UK and worldwide and helping them on their path to international acclaim.

The proceeds from this show will be used to set up an award in Kitty's name.
