Art on A Ukulele

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain are excited to announce a fundraising project they are working on with Mick Rooney RA and arts charity Art on a Postcard who have transformed themselves into Art on a Ukulele. The project brings together some of the best known names in contemporary art and music.

One of Mick’s submissions to the RA Summer Exhibition 2016 was a beautifully handcrafted ukulele, painted in his instantly recognisable rich, poetic style. The instrument opened Mick up to a world of ukulele enthusiasts and gave him the idea to create an orchestra of painted ukuleles. There will be a total of 30 ukuleles, 8 of which have been made by our friend Pete Howlett, that will be painted by some of the leading names in contemporary art.

The Ukes are delighted that they’ve been asked to play the finished ukuleles at a performance in London at the Jazz cafe on September 12 and that they’ll be sharing the stage with some very special guests. (Ticket details to follow.) The ukuleles will later be available to purchase at a special auction and the money raised will go to The Hepatitis C Trust.

Art on a Ukulele is launching a crowdfunding campaign on 3 May to help fund the project. Find out more about the project, including the fantastic incentives up for grabs which will include gig tickets, festival tickets and lots and lots of arty plectrums.
